Giải Khuyến Học Cộng Đồng Niên Khóa 2009-2010

Nhằm khuyến khích học sinh trau dồi học vấn và tích cực tham gia vào các sinh hoạt cộng đồng, năm nay Cộng Đồng Việt Nam Vùng Washington D.C., Maryland và Virginia, với sự bảo trợ của các mạnh thường quân, sẽ tiếp tục cấp phát 12 giải Khuyến Học Cộng Đồng, mỗi giải trị giá 500 Mỹ kim tiền mặt, gồm: 4 giải cho D.C., 4 giải cho Virginia, và 4 giải cho Maryland.

I. Điều kiện: Để được cấp giải Khuyến Học Cộng Đồng, học sinh phải hội đủ những điều kiện như sau:

1/ Là học sinh Việt Nam lớp 9 tới lớp 12 thuộc niên học 2009-2010 và cư ngụ tại DC, Maryland và Virginia

2/ Điền mẩu đơn có sẵn (đính kèm theo thông cáo)

2/ Nộp bản sao transcript với điểm GPA cho toàn niên học từ 3.50 trở lên

3/ Nộp một bài luận dài từ 250 tới 500 chữ bằng Việt ngữ hay Anh ngữ viết về những câu chuyện liên quan tới cuộc di dân của người Việt hay mô tả ít nhất một nét văn hóa đặc thù Việt Nam và những kinh nghiệm liên hệ đã ảnh hưởng tới sự trưởng thành của mình.

4/ Liệt kê ít nhất 3 sinh hoạt cộng đồng đã tham dự, đặc biệt là nêu lên vai trò lãnh đạo của mình

5/ Có mặt vào ngày thứ bảy 14 tháng 8 năm 2010 để được phỏng vấn và hiện diện trong buổi lễ phát giải Khuyến Học được dự trù vào ngày thứ bảy 21 tháng 8 năm 2010

II. Thời hạn nộp đơn: Từ nay cho tới hết ngày 7 tháng 8 năm 2010.

III. Ban cứu xét giải Khuyến Học: gồm các nhà giáo có kinh nghiệm giảng dạy.

Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Japanese American Former Internees Award Scholarships
to Southeast Asian Students

$50,000 in scholarships will be awarded to Southeast Asian high school seniors in the greater Washington, DC area in this 30th anniversary year of the Nisei Student Relocation Commemorative Fund at an awards ceremony in Arlington, Virginia on May 16, 2010.

The scholarships are available through a fund created by Japanese Americans (second generation “Nisei”) whose college educations were abruptly halted during World War II when they were forcibly removed from the West Coast and confined in US internment camps. 40 years later they resolved to commemorate the generosity of those who helped them during that crisis. In 1980 the Nisei Student Relocation Commemorative (NSRC) Fund was created to “repay a kindness” to help other students in need. The founders selected Southeast Asian refugees and their families because of their shared experience of displacement and disruption of education due to war – in this instance, the Vietnam War.

Each year the NSRC Fund selects a different region of the US that has a significant Southeast Asian population in which to award scholarships. The Washington, DC area, including Virginia and Maryland, was selected for 2010. Including this year’s awards, over 600 students and nearly $600,000 in scholarships have been granted. From the 100 applications received, 39 students of Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian ancestry will receive either $2000 Named Scholarships or $1000 general scholarships. The awards will assist these high-achieving, well-deserving students, many of them from needy families, to attend college in the fall – a significant repayment of the gratitude shown many years ago.
